Unfortunately, cats are highly susceptible to a wide variety of illnesses. One of the most common illnesses of cats is feline diabetes.

Feline Diabetes is a serious illness for cats, however, if it is diagnosed early it can be treated by a veterinarian.

While there are varying opinions on how cats get feline diabetes, the common assumption is that it is caused by too much sugar or a high level of glucose in the blood stream.

Simply put, the pancreas of the cat produces hormone insulin.

This hormone insulin controls the level of blood sugar in cats.

Feline diabetes occurs when the pancreas of the cat fails to produce enough hormone insulin.

The symptoms of feline diabetes can vary from cat to cat, however, the most common signs of the disease are an loss of appetite, sudden weight loss, a poor coat, an increase in urine activity and thirst.

If you notice any of these symptoms or a combination of them, you should take your cat to the veterinarian right away.

Without immediate veterinary treatment, your cat will become lethargic, vomit often and could possible go into a comma.

If you discover that your cat has Feline Diabetes, it should not be allowed outdoors and should be fed at a set time daily.

You may need to give your cat insulin shots as prescribed by your veterinarian.

It is often advised to administer insulin shots to your cat after it has eaten as this will help to prevent an occurrence of hypoglycemic shock.

You should be sure to keep a close eye on your cat after giving it an insulin shot and always follow the advice of your veterinarian.

In some cases, your cat may need to be on insulin shot treatment for the rest of his life, however, with proper and continuous treatment, your cat can live a long, normal, healthy life.
